In 1960 we revolutionized trekking backpacks when we went from wooden frames to light and strong aluminium frames. Now we have gone back.

Fjällräven’s Kajka, first launched in 2008, has been praised in outdoor media and among trekkers around the world for its smart functions, large capacity and user-friendly Perfect Fit Adjustment System.

But good can be even better, and for the summer of 2013, Kajka came in a new, upgraded version.

You can recognize most details. Some functions are even better. But one thing, we dare say, is totally unique: Kajka has an innovative, environmentally adapted frame construction made from FSC certified wood.

Reducing environmental impact

When we calculated our climate compensation for Kajka, we found out that the aluminium frame was responsible for a large proportion of the backpack’s environmental footprint.

The updated Kajka has a wooden frame made from birch. The material is laminated with a proven technique used in, among others, the furniture-making industry.

It is a tough, strong and lightweight construction with a clear green advantage. By using wood instead of aluminium we have reduced the CO₂ emissions of the frame by over 90 percent. This has been done without compromising functionality or strength, and without adding weight.

A little easier to carry

When designing the updated Kajka, we examined every aspect of the popular original backpack and came up with something even better.

And then, when you take Kajka out into the woods, you can do it knowing that going back to the roots can also be a step forward for the environment.
